Spectrum Birth Services Leadership
Julia Cooper, Co-Owner
MS, Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, Certified Lactation Counselor
Julia Cooper began her birth doula career after more than a decade as an animal midwife and nutritionist. Her work and education in animal midwifery enhanced her passion for the physiology of birth, and inspired her to birth her third child in the quiet comfort of her home.
In 2000, Julia made the transition from animal midwifery to human birth doula work and joined an historical doula practice in Chicago, Illinois where she gained experience working with midwives and doctors in both home and hospital birth environments. Julia’s natural ability to form strong professional and personal connections positioned her as an invaluable partner to OBGYNs, midwives, and nurses as she supported and empowered couples. It was also at this doula practice where Julia found a passion for working with survivors of past sexual traumas and the unique challenges these women face throughout their birth journeys. Her calm, gentle, and respectful approach fosters a deep sense of confidence in her clients—a trait necessary for any successful birth experience.
Julia is a lifelong learner and has attended countless workshops and seminars to acquire additional certifications. She presents clients with scientific, evidence-based information so that expecting families can make educated choices based on their values, preferences, and life circumstances.

Kim Martino-Sexton, Co-Owner
Childbirth Educator, Perinatal Coach
Kim Martino-Sexton’s passion for the birth process grew from attending Bradley Method classes in preparation for the first of her own two birth experiences. Eventually certifying in Bradley Method, Kim spent her boys’ growing years cultivating her interest in childbirth education and supporting newborn families while teaching out of her home. She began offering Birth Doula services to her childbirth class graduates in 1998. For the next several years, Kim attended hospital and home births while supporting families from pregnancy through the first weeks postpartum. Kim joined the obstetrics staff at Barnes Jewish Hospital in 2003 as a DONA Certified Birth Doula before founding her own company—The Newborn Family Coach.
Kim designed The Newborn Family Coach’s offerings to support the trifecta of the birth year: childbirth classes, birth doula services, and postpartum coaching. Kim joined forces with Julia Cooper to form Spectrum Birth Services and ensured that comprehensive before-, during-, and after-baby support was prioritized throughout the organization’s service offerings.
Equipped with a vast amount of experience and knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, Kim created a proprietary birth education series called Joyful & Informed Natural Childbirth back in 2009; which now serves as the foundation of Spectrum Birth’s Childbirth Education Series. Her passion for Childbirth Education led her to collaborate with a small group of progressive childbirth educators to found the St. Louis Alliance of Childbirth Educators in an effort to increase and strengthen the availability and quality of childbirth education and support for new families in the St. Louis area.
In 2015, Kim took on a half-time position at SSM as the Postpartum Resource Coordinator to revitalize Mother-To-Mother into what is now called – The MOMS Line: Peer Telephone and Group Support for women with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. The MOMS Line (314)768-MOMS provides free peer telephone and small group support for all moms in the St. Louis Metro area.
